Sawing and Piercing

A piercing saw, also known as a jeweler's saw, is a type of saw commonly used in jewelry making on sheet metal. It is usually used on softer metals as the saw is delicate. Like a coping saw, a piercing saw holds the blade in tension in a metal frame.

wikipedia

A traditional, time and labor intensive technique, it is a basic metalsmithing skill one either loves, or hates, but has to know.

Why would one dislike this technique?

The blades are 1/5 mm wide, flat, made of steel and under tension. Any quick movements and the blade will break.

This is a 45 minute time lapse of piercing a sheet of sterling silver with a Jeweler's Saw of a Sookyung Original Design. Each interior shape has a hole drilled in it so the blade can be threaded through and complete the cut without having to create a relief cut to the exterior just to remove the blade. This means between each new shape the blade must be re-threaded and re-tensioned.
